Written primarily in prison by the Apostle Paul… The Book of Colossians is known as a “Prison Epistle”. Paul sought to address some problems in the church where the members were mixing Greek philosophy in with Greek Theology.
In Chapters 1-2: Paul sends words of thanks to the faithful believers in Colosse. It is obvious that many people were teaching falsehoods about the nature of God and Jesus Christ, because Paul explained that “…we have redemption through his blood…” (Colossians 1:12) and he urges members of the church to “…preach, warning every many, and teaching every man in wisdom…” (Colossians 1:28). Paul expounds on baptism and our relationship to the Father and the Sons (Jesus Christ). It is as if he is re-teaching the members in the area about the Savior.
In chapters 3-4: Paul encourages the Saints to focus their “…affection on things above, not on things of the world.” (Colossians 3:2) He teaches believers how to live at home and manage family matters. He also teaches them how to get along with other believers and for them to put aside the petty situations that become obstacles in our lives that slow everyone down and prevent the spread of the Gospel. Paul teaches the meaning of forgiveness; “Forbearing one another and forgiving one another…” (Colossians 3:13)
