So you came across this Scripture Blog and now you might be wondering how is it that a “Mormon” can have an opinion on the Bible? Maybe you might have thought that “Mormons” don’t believe in the Bible. Let me assure you, that we do infact believe in the Bible! One of our main teachings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reads as follows:
“We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.” (Articles of Faith; 8)
So there you have it, we do believe in the Bible! Most members of The Church read from the King James Version, as we believe it is the most accurate translation in the English language. I personally have also read the “Reina Valera” which is written in Spanish. My love for the Bible is great! I have personally read it in English and Spanish a few times and continue to read it on almost a daily basis.
While serving in the Comayaguela Honduras Mission (a 2 year Mission for The Church), I quickly found the need to be more knowledgable about the scriptures, specifically the Bible. I personally had many questions in my life and with these questions led me study and ponder over the scriptures. Over the years I have learned SO much and continue to learn on a daily basis! I found that the Bible is TRUE, but I also can recognize that it is not all of the works of God. To compile God’s works on to a piece of paper or in a book would simply be impossible!
I have read, pondered and prayed to know that the Bible is the word of God. I have also come to know; through prayer that God has other scriptures! In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints we have been blessed with other Holy Scriptures known as the The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. I know that these books, along with the Bible are the word of God. But yet, still not complete in nature.
I hope that by expressing my personal beliefs and views of the scriptures I can enrich the lives of those who are able to read the words I write. I never intend to insult another religion or people; however sometimes in my scripture studies I will mention other religions or peoples beliefs to contrast what I personally believe to be as true. Please do not take offense! I welcome comments and questions of all kinds as so much as they do not contain foul words or are contentious in nature. I believe that contention is of the Devil and it only leads to darkness. When we share our believes and have a positive conversation about the scriptures, and God’s work we will bring out the light and truth… in order to help us all shine a little brighter as we walk down the path that God has intended for us.
Because “…God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthian 14:33). While serving as a disciple of Christ you WILL be mocked! As “…they mocked the messengers of God…” (2 Chronicles 36:16). My writing and my views expressed therein should be used as a method of removing any doubts to allow the Holy Ghost to teach “For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:12). The scriptures are “…hard to be understood…” (2 Peter 3:16) But it is important to study “…and search[ed] the scriptures daily…” (Acts 17:11) in order to “…be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh…” (1 Peter 3:15). We know however that, as Nephi pointed out to us (in the Book of Mormon), that we “…do not know the meaning of all things.” (1 Nephi 11:17). If you don’t know the answers, that is ok! For as Paul once wrote to the Corinthians, we too can place ourselves in Paul’s shoes when he said; “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)
My hope is that I can help you to understand better the scriptures, or simply understand a Latter-Day Saint view on the scriptures. I always follow the following rules when discussing matters of God, religion or scriptures…
Rules of Defense:
1: Give answers to those who ask. Don’t debate. Discuss.
2: Provide answers with meekness (humility) and fear. You are not right. God is.
3: Prove, answer and discuss your side of the story. Do not attack the teachings of others.
4: Our defense, is not intended to ‘prove without a doubt’ of the truth.
I know that God lives, He is our Eternal Father! Jesus Christ died for our sins and was resurrected… He Lives! Life is difficult at times, but it was meant to be. We are here now in the World to learn, to make the correct decisions and finally through the Atonement of Jesus Christ be given the ability to return and live with our Father in Heaven.
