Matthew 22:

Worldly Marriages 

                Jesus spake unto those gathered and told them of the Parable of the King’s Son; Jesus explains that a king invited people to a wedding feast, but those invited did not come. So the man sends more servants to invite them to the wedding, instead of accepting the invitation they kill the messengers. When the king heard what had happened, he was upset and sent armies to kill them and burn their cities. The king then sends out a broad invitation to ALL GOOD AND BAD, essentially inviting everyone that wanted to come to his son’s wedding. Once the guests had arrived, the king noticed one of the guests was not wearing proper wedding garments, and has the man bound and thrown into outer darkness, where there is “…weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:13-14)

                What does this Parable mean? God was the King, and He was celebrating His son’s (Jesus Christ) wedding. God called many to come and celebrate, however the servants He sent (the prophets) were always rejected. Finally he invites all to come unto Christ, yet some still don’t come. Those who came and had their heart set towards Jesus were properly dressed. One man, however, just wanted to come and enjoy the feast without really having his heart set upon the things of God or His son, Jesus Christ. This man, just like anyone else who doesn’t have their heart set on the right things is in jeopardy of being sent to “outer darkness”. Thus we see why Jesus said; many are called but few are chosen. Everyone is called to repentance and do good, but only a handful will do the will of God, and therefore be chosen.

The Pharisees, like usual are trying to ensnare Jesus by asking Him difficult questions. They ask; “…What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” (Matthew 22:17) Jesus knew that they were tempting Him and asks them why they are such hypocrites! Jesus responds; “Shew me the tribute money…Whose is this image and superscription?” (Matthew 22:19-20) The Pharisees responded with the obvious, that it is an image of Caesar. So Jesus responds to them with the simple, yet blunt; “…Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)

                Shortly after responding to the Pharisees, the Sadducees, who did not believe in the Resurrection, came to also tempt Jesus with questions. They ask Jesus; “…Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.” (Matthew 22:24) They propose a hypothetical situation where all seven brothers end up marrying the same wife until they all die. Thus all seven brothers were with the same woman, making the woman a widow seven times over. They ask Jesus, if this were the case; “…whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all had her.” (Matthew 22:28) At this point Jesus was probably a little irritated after being berated by the Pharisees, so He responds; “…Ye do err, not knowing the scripture, nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29) The Sadducees had done nothing, and yet had been in error simply because their beliefs were based on falsehoods. Jesus explains that there will be no marriage in the resurrection.

So will there or will there not be marriage in Heaven?

The Bible does not go into much detail about marriage in heaven. We do know that “…whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever…” (Ecclesiastes 3:14), therefore if Marriage is an institution before God of the binding of man and woman in Holy Matrimony; one would believe that marriage, Eternal Marriage, exists in Heaven.

James E. Talmage writes;

“In the resurrection there will be no marrying nor giving in marriage; for all questions of marital status must be settled before that time, under the authority of the Holy Priesthood, which holds the power to seal in marriage for both time and eternity.” (Jesus the Christ, p. 548.)

                LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie wrote:

 “What then is the Master Teacher affirming by saying, ‘in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven’? He is not denying but limiting the prevailing concept that there will be marrying and giving in marriage in heaven. He is saying that as far as ‘they’ (the Sadducees) are concerned, that as far as ‘they’ (‘the children of this world’) are concerned, the family unit does not and will not continue in the resurrection. Because he does not choose to cast his pearls before swine, and because the point at issue is not marriage but resurrection anyway, Jesus does not here amplify his teaching to explain that there is marrying and giving of marriage in heaven only for those who live the fullness of gospel law -a requirement which excludes worldly people” (Doctrinal New Testament Commentary 1:605,606).

While this may seem like a difficult subject for man to understand, LDS Doctrine believes that Marriage will continue on, after this life. Will marriage be performed in the next life? It seems that this is not the case. Many LDS members and leaders believe that marriage must be taken care of in this life and will probably exist now through the Resurrection, but not after the Resurrection.

After the Sadducees were put to silence, the Pharisees gathered together to see how they might tempt Jesus. One of the lawyers asked Jesus; “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto is, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22:36-39)

Transfigurations – Restoration

Jesus leads Peter, James and John upon a high mountain, and is transfigured before them: his face shines, his clothes become as white as the light. Moses and Elias [Elijah] appear, and talk to Jesus. Peter, out of the blue, suggests they make three tabernacles; one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elias. A voice then comes from heaven and declares; “…This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him.” (Matthew 17:5) Upon hearing this, the Apostles fall to the ground and were afraid. After lifting up their heads they see only Jesus and He tells them not to reveal their vision until after the Resurrection.

The Apostles then ask Jesus why the scribes said that Elias [Eliajah] must come first. Jesus confirms this and states that “…Elias [Elijah] truly shall first come, and restore all things.” (Matthew 17:11), however they were confused that Elijah had already come, but Jesus was referring to John the Baptist. Because Elijah would come a lot later to RESTORE the gospel in the last days. “…the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things…” (Acts 3:19-21) Jesus then runs into a man who pleads for Him to come and heal his son, because he had previously brought the child to His Apostles and they could not heal him. So Jesus takes the child and casts the devils out of him. The Apostles then ask Jesus “…Why could not we cast him out?” (Matthew 17:19) Jesus tells them; “…Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:20)

Jesus again prophesies of his death and Resurrection. Jesus explains that He is not liable to pay the temple tax, because kings demand taxes of strangers, not of their sons. Jesus pays the tax anyway, by miraculous provision of a coin that Peter finds in a fish’s mouth. (see Matthew 17:27)

Chapter 105: The Covenant of Abraham

“…Give thanks unto the Lord… Sing unto him… Glory ye in his holy name… Seek the Lord… seek his face…” (Psalms 105:1-4)

                We learn in the first four verses the importance of not only giving thanks to the Lord, but also praising his name… and seeking Him constantly.

“…Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” (Psalms 105:15) This is an important verse, because throughout all generations in time… the Lord’s servants have been attacked and this is a warning for those who try to hurt the anointed or servants of the Lord… basically… DON’T.

The rest of this Psalm goes through and reminds the reader of the Covenant the Israelites made with the Lord and reminds us of all the marvelous works and wonders the Lord did throughout time… but most importantly those miracles performed in the presence of the Israelites, when they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. Remember the commandments and KEEP THEM!

Chapter 106: Moses helped Israel

The author of this Psalm reminds the reader of the ancient Israelites, who when faced with adversity cursed the name of God. However, when in dire need of rescue the Lord would save them from their enemies. We are reminded of the amazing works of the Lord and how He parted the Red Sea and yet within a very short period of time they “…forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.” (Psalms 106:13-14)          

                How often to people forget the Lord? Especially after having witnessed miracles in their own lives or the lives of others? We as human beings are quick to forget. But like the people of old, we too go on to worship idols and because of this it causes much bloodshed and sorrow. Our worship of idols today can include money or the idol worship of celebrities. We need to take strict heed to this and stay away from idols.

Chapter 7: Genealogy Records/Priesthood

When the wall was built; and the doors hung, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, Nehemiah gave the charge of Jerusalem to his brother Hanani, and Hananiah the leader of the citadel, because he was a faithful man and feared God more than many.

Nehemiah said to them to not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.

Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt. Then God put it into his heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. Nehemiah found a register of the genealogy of those who had come up in the first return, and found written in it:

These are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city. Those who came with Zerubbabel were: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. All the Nethinim, and the sons of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred and ninety-two. And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not identify their father’s house nor their lineage, whether they were of Israel: the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two; and of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name. These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled. And the governor said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things till a priest could consult with the Urim and Thummim. Altogether the whole assembly was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty, besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers. Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five, their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty. And some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments. Some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand gold drachmas, and two thousand two hundred silver minas. And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priestly garments. So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel dwelt in their cities. When the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

Chapter 8: Ezra Records the Law of Moses

Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.

Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Ezra blessed the Lord. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.

Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, that this day is holy to the Lord; do not mourn nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them to go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. The Levites quieted all the people, by telling them to be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.

All the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them. On the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.

They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, and that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, by telling them to go out to the mountain, and bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths. Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the Water Gate and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim. So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness. Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed manner.

Chapter 7: Disobedience to the Lord

While in Jericho some of the men of Israel disobey the rules that were outlined by God and took more spoils then they were supposed to. It doesn’t detail exactly what the men did, except that they violated the commandment set forth by the Lord. So the Lord punishes them by have the people of Ai, who were very small and outnumbered defeat the Israelites.

After the defeat, Joshua cries to the Lord and the Lord responds; “…Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face” (Joshua 7:10)… Essentially saying, why are you crying and praying for help… go and take care of the problem. Kind of like a father telling their child that they have legs (after asking them, let’s say, to get something from another room.) and telling them to get it themselves. I learn from this, that God will hear our prayers, but sometimes we just have to do things ourselves. We can pray all we want for money, but unless we look for a job and then earn it… we won’t have it!

In the end the Lord causes that the people who disobeyed to be destroyed!

Chapter 8: Words of the Law of Moses

Joshua is encourage by the Lord to return to the land of the people of Ai and go back to smite them. So Joshua commands his whole army to go and slay the whole people, just as they had done with the land of Jericho. They end up killing over 12,000 people and finally end the killing by hanging the king in the tree, and leaving him there overnight. The entire city and land was burned and left desolate.

At the entrance to the city, Joshua built an altar to the Lord and there he read from the “Book of the Law of Moses” (one of the lost books of the Bible). From there Joshua read about the blessings and the cursing’s that come from either obeying the Law of Moses and the commandments of God, or choosing to ignore them and disobey them.

Chapter 33: Moses Blesses the Sons of Israel

Moses blesses each of the tribes of Israel; Levi is blessed to teach the Lord’s judgments and his law, Joseph is blessed above all. Through the lineage of Joseph, shall the tribes of Israel be gathered in the latter days. The tribe of Joseph and its descendants are those of the Book of Mormon. The people of the Ancient Americas who came over to the Americas around 600 b.c.

Chapter 34: Moses Dies

Moses is taken by the Lord to see the Promised Land. It does not tell us how, but my guess by spirit that Moses sees the Promised Land. The land that God had promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Moses was the greatest prophet of Israel (verse 10), he died at the age of 120 years old. But when he died, he died without problems, and void of any disease or signs of illness. (verse 5-7). He was buried in the land of Moab, against Bethpeor. But to this day no one knows the exact location of his burial site. For information on the birth of Moses; refer to Exodus 2.

Chapter 23: The Congregation

Moses speaks to the congregation and outlines who can and cannot enter into the congregation and more importantly the Tabernacle of Israel. This of course from previous chapters and books includes all unclean things, including those who disobey and do not follow the commandments of God.

Moses also outlines the laws of servants/slaves, usury and vows.

Moses states that if a slave comes into the midst of the children of Israel and the slave master comes to claim his slave/servant that the children of Israel can give refuge to the servant/slave that has escaped. (verse 15-16) and he states that they (the children of Israel) should not oppress the slave, or in other words the slave is now free among them.

Then in verses 19-20 Moses speaks about Usury, and that among strangers it is ok to have usury. Now I interpreted what Moses said, as the children of Israel were to not have interest rates, or very low interest rates among themselves on people who borrow money. But among outsiders whom were not part of the family that they would offer money to borrow at higher interest rates. Essentially helping out those who were family to you.

Chapter 24: Laws of Moses

Moses outlines the law of divorce, saying;

“When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house” (Deuteronomy 24:1)

                Essentially stating that only in unfaithfulness or any other sin against the holy matrimony shall divorce be permitted.

Moses also speaks to the congregation regarding newly-weds, stating;

“When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken” (Deuteronomy 24:5)

                If we took this literally, everyone who gets married would go on a 1 year honey moon, which I don’t think would be very practical. But we can take from this, that everyone who gets married should ensure that they start their marriage off strong and make sure that a huge focus is placed on each other and the development of that beautiful relationship. If this is done, we can see a higher percentage of happy marriages.

Moses then ends this chapter off, by stating that;

 “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin” (Deuteronomy 24:16)

                The second Article of Faith of the LDS church states; “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins and not for Adam’s transgression”

                Again we see a very clear principle in the Bible that is not followed by mainstream Christianity, for example many religions believe in the “original sin”, that we are “naturally sinful” because of the transgression of Adam and Eve, and that is why some religions (the Catholic church for example) baptize infants, because they are “born with sin”, this however, in my personally opinion is an abomination! Jesus himself said that

“…Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little once which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:3-6)

                Jesus spoke out about offending the children, because they were part of heaven, and we must become like a child to enter into the kingdom of heaven. If that is true, how can a baby, completely innocent and incapable of committing sin, needs to be baptized to be cleansed of sin?

The Book of Mormon has an entire chapter on the abomination of this practice. Moroni, who was ancient prophet who lived in the Americas spoke out about this;

“…little children are alive in Christ, even from the foundation of the world; if not so, God is a partial God, and also a changeable God, and a respecter to persons; for how many little children have died without baptism! Wherefore, if little children could not be saved without baptism, these must have gone to an endless hell… For awful is the wickedness to suppose that God saveth one child because of baptism and the other must perish because he hath no baptism.” (Moroni 8:12-14), see also Moroni Chapter 8 in its entirety.

Chapter 21: Disobedience

If anyone is found to be murdered and the culprit is unknown, then the priests shall find the murderer and take him to be slain in the valley.

18-21 – If a son disobeys his parents, he shall be stoned to death.

22-23 – If anyone breaks the commandments he shall be hanged.

Chapter 22: Laws of Moses

Laws regarding;

  • Lost Property, if you find something of your neighbors, then you shall hold on to it until your neighbors comes to claim it. This is very similar to lost property laws of the modern world.
  • Wearing of Proper Clothes (verse 5): A woman shall not wear the clothing of a man, and a man shall not wear the clothing of a woman.
  • Safety Railings: (verse 8): Installing safety railings, so that people don’t fall from your roof. If they do, then the blood will not be on your hands.
  • Marrying a virgin: If a man take a woman to be his wife and finds out that she is not a virgin, then he shall take her before the gates of the city to get the tokens of her virginity. If it is proven that she is not a virgin, then she shall be stoned to death.
  • If a man lie with another man’s wife, then both of them shall be stoned to death.
  • If a man rape a woman, then the man shall be stoned to death.

Chapter 13: Don’t Worship False Gods

The Lord warns about false prophets, who have dreams. Anyone who advocates worshiping other gods than the Lord is to be shunned and killed. All Idolatrous cities are to be destroyed.

Chapter 14: What you can/not eat

This chapter is essentially a continuation to Leviticus 11, which outlines all of the unclean animals, fish and fowl that man should not eat.

    • the wild goat
    • the pygarg
    • the wild ox

  • Animals you can’t eat:
    • the camel
    • the hare
    • the coney
    • the swine

The rest of the clean/unclean animals can be found in Leviticus 11. This chapter is more of a reminder to the Israelite people.

The chapter also mentions of the importance of paying your tithing, which is 1/10 of your increase.

Chapter 9: 40 Days and 40 Nights Fasting

Compare to Exodus 32; this is the same story but from the perspective of Moses. Moses gathers the congregation of Israel and reminds them that they can conquer a nation greater than themselves. The reason that they were going to have the power to drive the giants out of their land, is because the people residing in the land were wicked.

Moses tells the congregation that he spent 40 days/nights fasting; drinking neither water or eating bread. This way he was more receptive of the spirit and this is what probably enabled him to see God and receive the Ten Commandments along with other instructions from the Lord.

Chapter 10: Love God

When Moses was on the mount for forty days/nights the Lord commanded him to make a small ark of Shittim wood to place the tablets of stone in. All that God requires, is that the congregations of Israel loves and serve him, if they do this, they will also love and serve their neighbor and the stranger in the land. Because they were once strangers in the land of Egypt too.
