Acts 17

Acts 17: The Unkown God

Paul goes to Amphipolis and Apollonia where he comes into Thessalonica and teaches Jews in a synagogue; “And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath day reasoned with them out of the scriptures.” (Acts 17:2) Many of the Jews listened and understood the scriptures and were converted, these Jews “…received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11) And many of them believed, however an equal number of them did not believe and caused many to instigate a riot.

Some of those who believe ask Paul; “…May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?” (Acts 17:19) Paul speaks to the men of Athens; “…I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKOWN GOD, Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him I declare unto you.” (Acts 17:22-23)

Paul then explains who God is; God… made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation: That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we life, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver, or stone, graven by art and the man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent.  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” (Acts 17:24-31)

Paul explains that we are all the offspring of God, meaning we are His children, God created all men equally and the time of ignorance is over… God will no longer overlook worshipping false gods, the time is now to repent and turn to Him. God is not far from us, and Him being our Father we can turn to Him in prayer and receive guidance from Him. In today’s world we may not be worshiping a false god, but we might be worshiping Gold, Silver, Money or Fame.

Jeremiah 51-52

Jeremiah 51-52

Chapter 51: Babylon shall be destroyed

Jeremiah foretells of the destruction of Babylon. We learn that Jesus Christ is the “builder” of the earth and God the Father is the “creator” or the “architect” who laid out the plans.

“He [Jesus] hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his understanding.” (Jeremiah 51:15) Babylon will be destroyed by the Medes. All shall be broken in pieces. The daughter of Babylon is like threshing floor, it is time to thresh her. Babylon will be brought as a lamb to the slaughter; it will become a dwelling place for dragons. Jeremiah instructs Seraiah (the chief priest) to read this prophecy in Babylon, then bind a stone to the prophecy and throw it in the Euphrates to demonstrate that Babylon shall sink.

When reading this it is not certain what “book” Jeremiah was speaking of, was it the Book of Jeremiah that we know of today? I personally believe that the book is different from what we know and is another Lost Book of the Bible.

Chapter 52: Zedekiah’s sons die in Jerusalem

We are reminded of an account of the defeat of Zedekiah by the Babylonians (see 2 Kings 25). Zedekiah’s sons are killed, Zedekiah, himself blinded.  Jerusalem is besieged and looted by the Chaldeans. We also learn that the way Jehoiachin is treated in his captivity improves.

1 Chronicles 1-2

Chapter 1: Genealogy of Adam

The first chapter of 1st Chronicles tells us a few things. First we already know that Adam and Eve had three sons by name (Genesis 4:1-2,4:25) and many other unnamed sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4). Yet in the first opening verses we read nothing about Cain and Abel, but only of Seth. So we know that there is a more specific reason for this set of Genealogy, leaving out Cain and Abel.

While there is much we don’t know and there is a LOT MORE that I don’t know I have included what I do know, with the actual verses from 1 Chronicles chapter one for your own reading and studying.

Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth were the survivors of the flood and the sons of Noah became the basis for the family in the post-flood world.

The sons of Japheth are commonly known/supposed to have been the ones who founded the people of Europe, and northern Asia.

2 Kings 9-10

Chapter 9: Jezebel Slain and Eaten by Dogs

Elisha calls one of the children of the prophets and tells him to take a box of oil and go to Ramoth-gilead, there he is commanded to take a man into an inner chamber and anoint him king.. So the man goes and meets Jehu and tells him that he has some business with him. The young prophet anoints Jehu and commands him to take over the house of his master Ahab, that they might avenge the death of all the prophets at the hand of Jezebel. For the house of Ahab shall be smitten and be like unto the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Jezebel shall be eaten by dogs and no one will bury her. After telling Jehu all of this the young prophet left. Jehu is then asked by his men if everything is ok. Jehu tells them what has happened and all the men blew trumpets announcing that Jehu was

Chapter 10: Ahab’s 70 Sons Are Slain

Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria to the rulers of Jezreel and the elders. His later stated something to the effect of: “When this letter reaches you take your masters sons and their chariots and horses and your fortified city and place your most qualified of your sons to sit on his father’s thrown.” Jehu was trying to incite violence. Jehu then wrote another letter telling the leaders to kill the 70 sons of Ahab and cut their heads off. The leaders then sent Jehu the heads of the 70 sons in baskets.

Jehu then departed and headed towards Samaria. On his way there he stopped to meet the brothers of Ahaziah the king of Judah. Jehu then orders for their execution and kills 42 men, leaving none of them alive. Jehu then left to meet Jehonadab the son of Rechab asking him if his heart was right. Jehonadab responded that his heart was right and left with Jehu in his chariot to go to Samaria to kill all that remained of Ahab and his household.

Jehu gathered all the people together and told them that Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him more. So he called for all the prophets of Baal and his servants and priests to come to perform a huge sacrifice for Baal. So all the people from all over the land came to the temple of Baal to witness this great sacrifice. Once all the worshippers of Baal where in the temple he had 80 men waiting outside to kill all of them and not let one out. After the killing began, most of the worshippers gathered near the center of the temple… then Jehu caused that the building should collapse in on itself and be burned… thus ending the worship of Baal throughout all of Israel. Jehu, even after doing the will of the Lord was still sinning. Jehu reigns and his family until the fourth generation.

Because of the wickedness of parts of Israel, the Lord made other parts of Israel that were enemies to Israel successful that they started to gain victory over many pieces of land. Jehu dies and his buried in Samaria. Jehoahaz his son, reigned in his place and the period that Jehu reigned for over Israel was 28 years.

Deuteronomy 33-34

Deuteronomy 33-34

Chapter 33: Moses Blesses the Sons of Israel

Moses blesses each of the tribes of Israel; Levi is blessed to teach the Lord’s judgments and his law, Joseph is blessed above all. Through the lineage of Joseph, shall the tribes of Israel be gathered in the latter days. The tribe of Joseph and its descendants are those of the Book of Mormon. The people of the Ancient Americas who came over to the Americas around 600 b.c.

Chapter 34: Moses Dies

Moses is taken by the Lord to see the Promised Land. It does not tell us how, but my guess by spirit that Moses sees the Promised Land. The land that God had promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Moses was the greatest prophet of Israel (verse 10), he died at the age of 120 years old. But when he died, he died without problems, and void of any disease or signs of illness. (verse 5-7). He was buried in the land of Moab, against Bethpeor. But to this day no one knows the exact location of his burial site. For information on the birth of Moses; refer to Exodus 2.

Chapter 4: 30+ Years

Several times in this chapter it mentions 30+ years old to 50 years old. Verses: 3,23, 30, 35, 39, 43 and 47. Levitie Law required teachers and/or priests to be 30+ years old. Jesus was baptized at the age of 30 and began his ministry in the same year. He was following this Levite Law. See Luke 3:23.

When the camp of Israel moves, because at this point the Israelites had fled from Egypt and were still wandering in the wilderness. This meant that the Tabernacle was mobile. As we learned in the last chapter each family within the tribe of the Levites were in charge of one particular part of the tabernacle. The Levite Families of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari carry the burden of carry all of the tabernacle (in its mobile form) as they travel.
